Sustainability means that products are designed for their’ life cycle’; for instance, manufacturing, distribution, usage and disposal with minimal acceptable influence in the environment, resources, and occupational health.
Sustainability is too the ability of a society to make conscious and responsible use of its resources without exhausting them or exceeding its capacity for renewal and without compromising the access to those resources for future generations.
The Life Cycle concept should be the backbone of any industrial culture; it is also called ‘the Sustainable Industrial Processes’ well used in industrial plants and competitive companies responsible for several products. It outlined the term ‘environmentally friendly and is used as a standard for evaluating different technical solutions.
This innovative process should incorporate in its design stages to be more efficient:
· Producing less waste and scrap,
· Not pollute the environment
· Using more safe substances than the ones used today.
· And that the products and by-products produced by them.
Therefore, Sustainability consists of producing goods and services from existing resources, natural, energy and economic, among others, at a rate in which they are not exhausted without generating more pollution the environment can absorb without being harmed.
To achieve sustainable consumption is essential to modify current society habits and practices, particularly in the industrial or manufacturing sector. The use of goods and services responsibly minimises the need for natural resources, reduces pollution and waste emissions, and avoids putting future generations’ lives at risk.
At a global level, it promotes the creation of production and consumption systems responsible for carrying out processes of recycling, reusing and reduction as a form of sensible consumption of goods that uses them more times before becoming waste; for example, glass, cardboard, paper, plastic, textiles, among others.
Process engineering is a technological career that, when applying the fundamental principles of Engineering, Economics and Ecology, seeks to produce goods or products that society requires to meet its needs. The production process corresponds to the operational component of the company, which, to be competitive, must seek to produce optimally, that is, with technological, organisational, economic, social and environmental efficiency.
Process engineers design, operate and control industrial processes in which raw materials (natural resources) or chemicals (resulting from other techniques) are used and transformed into products or inputs. Currently, the new paradigm of process engineers focuses on the design and operation of sustainable industrial processes.
A company that uses a sustainable industrial process in its plant should not generate environmental problems. The sustainable industrial process is innovative, efficient, “clean,” safe and contributing to Sustainable Development.
Responsible and competitive companies, which transform raw materials and energy into products or inputs, have in the industrial plant the operational component of the organisation.
The Sustainable Industrial Process must bring together aspects of an integral process design, minimising the environmental impact and improving the Sustainability of the final design.
