How can we define Smart Cities?

Simple said they are large communities operated by advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI.)  Everything ranging from an operation based on Big Data (traffic control, power management) to household systems like Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and lighting, through the Internet of Things (IoT,) intending to make our lives simpler and our society better heightened and more energy-ecologically aware.   Hereafter some examples.

-       Machine Learning technology reaching all levels

Machine Learning (ML) edge-technology will have broad availability in 2021 and beyond. Initially, it was mainly used in large industries and not meant for end-point consumers. The ML is very accessible so that real-time analyses can function still at the micro-level without missing accuracy.  ML processes adopted to Smart Cities and households and will offer this technology to the standard consumer.

-       Conversational AI

Virtual assistants like Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant are technologies more suitable to human’s speech.  Little by little conversational AI behind these platforms is becoming ever more intelligent. Nowadays, conversational AI can help to manage homes too.  Shortly, we will be capable of os using it on much more complex scenarios.

-       Infrastructure Supported by 5G

The progress technological framework will need to be renovated from top to bottom.  Smart Cities’ transformation demands an all-encompassing infrastructure capable of supporting everything ranging from city-wide systems to advanced home automation systems.

This ever-increasing transformation requires relocating and processing the related information; the present-technological framework will need improvement. 5G wireless tech might be the solution to this Smart City transformation and home automation, now developing quickly and easily reached in every location of the world.

-       A home networking concept

Intelligent-home-automation systems can move along one or more wireless network and software framework —the universal Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth. Other; Alexa or Google Assistants programs are software and voice assistant frameworks.  Most homes already have a wireless network operating, making intelligent product integration simple.

Cities and homes are constantly changing, evolving alongside the industry and consumer’s trends, especially now with the rapid urbanisation around the world.  However, due to the current health-economic crisis, there is an escalating trend to work remotely from home or any other place, finding that living in smaller and out the city towns is expensive.

Property investors and landlords must keep an eye on the latest trends and developments to build up more appealing approaches and attract new residents.

 - Transition to clean-sustainable technologies

Sustainability and automation go hand in hand at all times. Therefore, we will watch the legacy equipment and installations gradually replaced by much more sustainable alternatives.  For instance, energy-inefficient incandescent systems, replaced by professional street luminaires powered by LED technology, are now a fundamental change of tomorrow’s smart cities.

Each automated feature in cities and homes will undoubtedly increase our energy demand, complicating our efforts to enhance sustainability.  The only way to deal with this is to bring power production directly into the households of future Smart Cities, such as community or rooftop solar systems, waste consumption reduction, automated traffic lights, efficient transport and mobility, better use of water supported by the local and national authorities.

- Higher Demand for Data Privacy

The sustainability of future Smart Cities significantly involves an innovative environment centred on data flow. The more complex, the more vulnerable the information is, left to hackers and cybercriminals attacks.  Consequently, Smart City residents will demand far more vital data privacy than what is think about average at present.  The implications require a collaborative engagement of governments, industries, scientific, citizens in general, and above all, the security industry.

Conclusions: becoming a Smart City demands changes more transformative than disruptive, primarily based on current technological development. That’s where building your connected city and home around major automation systems can put a stop to chaos in big urban cities.
